Family Pictures

It had been a few years since we did family pictures with my side of the family.  So we enjoyed some beautiful weather, gorgeous fall colors, cooperative kids, and a fun photo session with Megan.

Things Have Happened...

October came.  October went.  We are halfway through November.  And here's what has happened (in addition to cross country and our Columbus Day trip, which have already been covered in depth)...

I went with Briggs and his class to Springfield for his 4th grade field trip.  My group was Briggs, his friend George, and two sweet little girls (Amelia and Mila).  One of my easier field trip assignments!

We visited the Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln's Home, and New Salem.  The weather was beautiful, the kids were well-behaved, and the day moved along quickly.

It was a fun, educational day.  I enjoyed my time with Briggs and his friends.  I could have done without the several hours on a school bus, but that's probably just my old lady body talking.

I participated in the Trunk or Treat that NTA put on.  I was pretty proud of my easy-peasy Soccer Momster theme that I threw together.

While I was handing out candy, Staley and her Singapella group performed in the parking lot for all the Trunk or Treaters.

Briggs got chosen to be part of the Hornet Buzz news team at school.  He has really enjoyed taking pictures, writing scripts, and presenting on 'Top Stories' for the weekly news show.

We didn't get around to our family visit to the pumpkin farm, much to Briggs' chagrin.  (Poor third child!)  So on October 30th, on the way home from the orthodontist, we made a quick stop at Ackerman Farms.  I insisted that all 3 kids pick out pumpkins (for Briggs' sake), although Briggs was the only one who actually ended up carving his.  He did it all by himself this year, including scooping out the pumpkin guts.

Adelie dressed up as an M&M for the Penguin Project Halloween Party.  Her partner, Naomi, was a boxer.  In retrospect, we should have dressed Adelie up as a punching bag.  Then they would have been in serious contention for the partner costume prize.

Briggs is my only kid who still has a Halloween party at school.  He wore his Harry Potter costume and enjoyed his last official school Halloween party with treats, games, and crafts.  After all my years of attending these parties, I can't say that I'm overly sad to say good-bye to this tradition.

We enjoyed a Halloween evening with the Hostetlers.  While Stella, Adelie, and Briggs trick or treated in our neighborhood and the Hostetler's neighborhood (and checked out the Chapman's haunted house down the street) with Holly and I, Staley and Olivia just hung out at our house.  Then we all enjoyed dinner together at our house.  It's been a fun tradition doing Halloween together with the Hostetlers the last few years.

For trick or treating, Briggs wore his Harry Potter costume while Adelie recycled the 'Apple Pi' costume that Staley wore a few years ago.

November kicked off with another trip to Springfield, this time with Staley and her friends for the 8th grade field trip to the Lincoln Museum.  (I definitely feel much more informed about all things Abraham Lincoln now.)

As easy as Briggs' group was, being in charge of Staley, Morgan, and Opal was even easier.

This was my first time at the Lincoln Museum, and I really enjoyed it.  (And as someone who is not always a museum person, that is high praise.)  Stopping for lunch at Mission BBQ was a fun way to round out the field trip day.

Basketball games have officially started, so Staley's dance team practices and dancing at the games has kicked into high gear.

NTA holiday performances have also started, so we have added those into the mix along with NTA classes, EMS drama club, Davenport drama club, Hornet Buzz, quizzing, and church activities.

In the midst of the busy, Zach and I were able to slip away for a week of hiking and relaxation in Arizona.  This will have its own post, but it was definitely a fall highlight.

And just like that, our October disappeared, and we are staring down a little over a month until Christmas is here.  I'm not sure where the time keeps going, but I am trying to hold onto the magic of these crazy, busy, full, fun days during this season of life.

Cross Country

Cross country season is officially over.  From summer open runs to practice starting the first week of August until the end of season banquet in late October, cross country filled our schedule and our minds through much of the summer and fall.  Staley was running her second season of middle school cross country while I was assistant coaching in my second season of middle school cross country.

Staley worked so hard to prepare herself for her second season of cross country.  She maintained her running streak, which is now almost 600 days.  She did long runs of 5-6 miles and various workouts on her own all summer long as well as attended the high school cross country camp two days/week in July.  She ran on vacation.  She ran at church camp.  She ran at dance camp.  She ran with friends.  She ran with me.  She ran with Zach.  She ran on her own.  She logged lots of miles and was hopeful to see that translate to a successful season.

And it did!

We had a team of about 50 girls and boys that made for a highly competitive group.  Staley started the season as the top girl on the varsity squad and ended the season the same way.  She was the top Eureka girl in all but two of the meets.  Her season average, PR, team rank, and number of varsity medals were all the best on the girls' team this season.

Staley started the season with a time of 14:17 at her first meet of the season, just nine seconds from her PR of last year.  Staley quickly shattered that by dropping down to 13:47 in the second meet of the season.  Her PR for the season ended up being a 13:08 at Delavan!  This was a full minute faster than her previous season's PR.

There was plenty of hard work throughout the season, but there were also a lot of fun activities and highlights, like...

...the practice meet to kick off the season...

creek runs...

going to Wally's after the Pontiac meet...

celebrating the 8th graders at 8th grade night...

seeing friends from other schools...

and cousins...

team meal and decorating party for Homecoming...

bring your parent to practice day...

sectional team meal and movie night...

state team meal...

and the end of the season banquet.

Staley set some goals for the season.  One of her goals was to get an individual medal at a meet, which had eluded her all season last year.  She accomplished that 3 times throughout the season at the invitationals at El Paso, Germantown, and Olympia.

She also set goals for running under 13:30 (also accomplished!) and making it to state...

which she did with a gutsy individual performance at Sectionals.  Although both the boys' and girls' teams placed 4th at sectionals and didn't advance as teams, Staley grabbed the last individual spot for the girls while Hudson and Ethan advanced for the boys.

It was so fun to see Staley's hard work that she had put in all summer and throughout the season pay off in such a big way.  Although it was disappointing that the teams did not advance, I was glad that we at least had a few kids that could represent Eureka at state.

State week preparation is always fun, and with just 3 kids to focus on, it was easy to incorporate some fun activities into our week.

Staley invited Morgan to come train with her throughout the week so that she didn't have to do all her workouts alone.

We enjoyed a mini-bus trip over to Normal to practice on the course...

followed by dinner at Core Life Eatery.

There was also soccer for practice day with the whole sectional team...

and a destination run to our house for a smoothie bar.

And, of course, there are always state signs...

the state send off at school...

the decorated bus...

and lots of supporters who come to cheer.

I think Staley was more nervous about this race, not only because it was state but also because she was on her own rather than with her team.  Regardless, Staley ran well and was pleased with the outcome.

Her official time at state was 13:35, and she finished 108th out of 223 runners.

It was a really fun cross country season, both as a coach and as a parent.

I really loved getting to know all the kids on the team.  In the off season, I attended some courses, did a lot of reading and learning, and worked hard to put together a training plan for the kids throughout the season.

It was a mentally and physically exhausting season, but I loved pouring into the kids, seeing them improve, developing relationships with them, cheering them on, and teaching them to love this sport that I love.

I love cross country.  I loved getting to coach a great group of kids.  I loved watching Staley work hard and meet the goals she set for herself.  I loved growing and learning and improving throughout the season as a coach as the kids grew and learn and improved as runners.  And I love that now there is a break to regroup, reset, and then start getting ready for next season.
