Mom Life

Yesterday, Briggs had nothing he had to do and nowhere he had to be.  Briggs fussed all day about being bored and not having anything to do.  Today after church I gave the kids some chores to do before we went out for an afternoon and evening of family fun.  Briggs fussed about not having any free time.

They Say...

The other day, Briggs asked me if I could get him some more long underwear.  Confused, I asked why he needed long underwear.  He responded, "You know, like the underwear I wear.  I keep running out of them.  Not the short ones, but the long ones."

We watched a new Christmas movie this year called "Journey to Bethlehem."  It was a modernized musical version of the nativity story.  Although they stayed true to the primary story, the movie took some creative liberties with the Biblical account of Jesus' birth.  We were commenting on these throughout the movie.  Towards the end of the movie, Herod's son was in the barn with Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus.  Adelie mused, "I hope he doesn't kill the baby.  That would really be a twist."

Truth

The most common phrase in our house right now is "Bri-iggs!  Stop!!!"

Oh, the joys of a 9 year old boy who is very good at annoying his big sisters.

Things to Remember...

It's been awhile since I've done a post specifically about the things I want to remember about my kids at this specific time in our lives.  So many of my posts lately have just been keeping up with our schedule and activities and trips and the bigger moments that are filling our days.  But at the same time, there are the day to day pieces of our lives that are just as important...the little moments that make up our days and weeks.  Although the kids aren't changing as much or as quickly as they used to, these are still the little things that I want to remember about them right now.  I want to remember...

1.  How Briggs' self-regulation and behavior has been improving substantially over the past few months.  He has always had ebbs and flows with his temper and his fits and his reactionary ability to fall apart quickly and easily.  Lately he has been doing so much better.  He is doing things that he is asked without arguing, complaining, or throwing fits.  He is transitioning easier from preferred activities.  He is handling disappointments and bumps in the road without (or with less) tears.  I'm not saying that he doesn't still argue or whine or throw fits on occasion, but it is much less than it had been.  I'm really hopeful that this a sign of maturation and growth and that we are leaving some of this behind us for good.

2.  How Staley and Adelie are growing so much closer and "reconnecting" again.  They were best buddies when they were little, but as Staley got older, they grew apart with Adelie consistently wanting to be with or do things with Staley and Staley demonstrating an indifferent or even mean attitude towards her sister.  This has been a change over the past year or so with the girls growing closer again.  They enjoy spending time together, are consistently making up dances or doing tricks together in the basement, Adelie helps Staley with her quizzing at night, and Staley is much kinder and more inclusive with her sister now than she used to be.  I love seeing this change in the girls and their relationship.  (On the other hand, Briggs and Adelie play a little less together now than they did and seem to bicker and argue more.  I guess we can't have it all.)

3.  How Briggs is obsessed with this video game called Dragon Quest.  Zach had played Dragon Quest as a kid, so he introduced it to Briggs as a computer game that they would play together several months ago.  Briggs loved it and was excited every time I would take the girls somewhere so that he and Dad could have a "boy's night" to play Dragon Quest.  Zach recently found the game for the Wii, and Briggs asks him every single day if they are going to have a chance to play together.  He gets so excited talking about it and loves any opportunity that he and Zach have to play it together.  In the same way, Adelie loves playing the 'Connection' every night with Zach and looks forward to this little thing that she and Zach always do together.

4.  How Briggs asks to go to the library almost every day after school or anytime we are within 20' of the library building.  (He is still my creature of habit.)  He enjoys graphic novels, but is also into 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' books and 'I Survived.'  He will read longer novels, but really prefers books he can read in one sitting and sometimes needs a push to finish a longer book that he has started.  He did just read 'Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas' for a school project and declared it his new favorite book.  He is also still big into listening to audiobooks and is currently re-listening to the Humphrey books.

5.  Adelie is my biggest reader at the moment.  She tears through books at an alarming rate.  I know not to try to tell her anything important while she is reading as she won't actually hear me or remember anything I said.  Her current favorite series are 'Keeper of the Lost Cities' and 'The Book Wanderers.'

6.  Staley still enjoys reading, but her busy schedule gives her less time to read than the other two.  Her current favorite series is 'The Inheritance Games', but she reads a variety of other things as well.  She is currently reading 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and is listening to the Vanderbeekers series on audiobook.

7.  How Staley continues to keep her running streak alive.  She is at 621 days and counting.  Despite her busy, busy, busy schedule of school sports and dance and theater and quizzing and all the things, she finds time to get at least a mile every day.  When it's too cold or the weather is too bad, she will run stairs inside at the house.  She gets up early to run before school if she'll have a busy evening.  Even when she was sick a few weeks ago, she still got in her run every day.  Her dedication is truly amazing to me.

8.  How Adelie is thriving in middle school and truly finding her place.  She has a great group of friends who are sweet and kind and who make her feel comfortable being herself.  She loves her teachers and prides herself on doing well in all her classes.  Being involved in the Penguin Project is a great fit for her, and she is already making decisions about what she wants to be involved in next year so that she can continue to do Penguin.  Adelie did well in grade school, but middle school has been an even better experience for her.

9.  How Briggs is different in many ways from the girls, and I am learning and seeing these differences in personality, school, and responsibility.  Briggs has an obnoxious streak that I fully blame on his Y chromosome.  Potty humor, loudness, squirrely-ness, and doing things to specifically annoy the girls are a part of our lives now.  I have realized as we are getting into 4th grade that things I never had to track or think about with the girls, I do with Briggs.  He was bringing home some poor grades, and I realized that he wasn't studying for tests, he was turning in late assignments, he was rushing through assignments in order to play fun computer games or read books in class, and he was making lots of careless mistakes in his work.  I never had to help the girls in this area, but I've realized that I have to set guidelines and expectations for Briggs in order to do the work he is capable of in class.  Since setting these expectations (and telling him that he couldn't play computer games at school until his grades improved), he has made a marked change.

10.  How all 3 of my kids are growing in their independence and helpfulness.  When I assign chores or ask the girls to do something, they typically just do it without complaint.  (How refreshing!  Briggs is still a bit of a work in progress.)  The kids can do most any chore around the house and do it (pretty) well.  They can make simple meals, clean up after themselves, and are even sometimes helping out without being asked.  (Not most of the time, but sometimes is better than rarely or never.)  It is so nice as we move into this phase when the kids are truly being helpful.

I love just thinking about my kids at certain points in time.  I have enjoyed all the phases and stages, but I am really enjoying this time.  The kids are independent and helpful.  They enjoy each other and get along pretty well.  We have fun playing family games and watching family movies and having family discussions.  They are fun to talk to, have good senses of humor, are easy to travel with, and are finding out who they are and embracing that.

Good-bye, November!

It's mid-December now and our schedule is full of all the Christmas-y performances and activities that fill the December calendar.  That post will be coming soon.  In the meantime, here is my quick up-date on the non-Christmas-y things that have happened since mid-November that I haven't yet blogged about.

We took the kids to St. Louis one evening to see 'Peter Pan' at the Fox Theatre.  Briggs declared it his favorite show that he has ever seen.

We ate at Fountain on Locust (a favorite!), made a quick stop at Ikea, and enjoyed a fun family evening at the theater.

The girls are both performing in Peter Pan, Jr. in February with their middle school drama club, so it seemed like the perfect chance to see the full Broadway show to help them prepare.

After the show, we went to the stage door so the kids could meet some of the actors and get some autographs.  We were able to meet several of the ensemble actors as well as the actors who played Wendy, Hook, Smee, and Peter Pan.  So fun!

To continue with our live theater viewing, Briggs performed in his 4th grade Drama Club show 'The Rockin' Tale of Snow White.'

He had 2 roles in the show.  He played the king at the beginning of the show.

And then he was Mel Merman, the DNR rep.  The  DNR rep was the part that the girls really wanted him to have in the show, so he was excited when he got cast in that role.  He was fantastic in both parts!

He had lots of lines to memorize and a short solo song that he sang a few times.  He was so funny and expressive and delivered his performance with gusto.  He was a highlight of the show, and I loved seeing him shine on stage in a lead role.

The kids had been practicing 3 days/week after school since early in the school year.  They worked very hard on the show, and it paid off.

It was a super cute show, and Briggs was wonderful in both his parts.  He had a great time performing with his friends and classmates, and we were really proud of him.

We took advantage of a little bit of free time over Thanksgiving break to enjoy some family fun.  I took the girls to see Wicked in the theater, which we all really enjoyed.  And then we went back the next day to see Moana 2 in the theater as an entire family.  We don't often go to the movies, so going 2 days in a row was a bit on the crazy side for us, but it was nice to have the empty evening and free time to make that happen.

We went to my Aunt Bonnie's house for Thanksgiving with my side of the family.  The kids enjoyed their time with cousins and second cousins while we enjoyed visiting with family...and eating lots of fantastic food.

Dance team is in full swing with practices and/or games almost every day after school.

Staley went with her Bible Quizzing team to Miracle Camp for their first Quiz-off of the season.  Even though all the girls are 7th or 8th graders, they had to quiz up at the high school level as Michael is a sophomore.  Despite quizzing against high schoolers, they still finished in 5th place out of 17 teams and Staley finished as the 4th best quizzer out of all the high schoolers.

We also got together with Zach's family for a get together since we wouldn't be together on Thanksgiving and then we got together with my family after Thanksgiving to celebrate November birthdays.  Family time is always a highlight.

We had a great, full November and a slight Thanksgiving break reprieve before leaping into a December full of Christmas preparations, performances, and celebrations.  We were a little sad to say good-bye to November but excited for what December has in store.

Arizona: Sedona

After our disappointing Bears loss and our epic Grand Canyon hike, we then headed to Sedona to spend the rest of our week.  Our home base was a nice condo in the sweet little village of Oak Creek right next to Sedona.  It was a great home base of our days of exploring Sedona.

After arriving late to Sedona from our epic day in the Grand Canyon, we slept in, walked around the community a bit, stopped in for some coffee and bakery goods, grabbed some groceries, and then headed out to do a little hiking on some trails within walking distance from our condo.  We popped into the Sedona Juice Co. for a smoothie lunch on our way to our hike.

On our first day of hiking, we hiked the Bell Rock Pathway to Big Park Loop to Courthouse Butte Loop back to the Bell Rock Pathway.

This graphic from Zach's fitness app showed a great view of the big loop we made around the red rock formations of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.

It was a beautiful area surrounded by all these amazing red rock formations.

We ended our hike by climbing up on Bell Rock.  We decided that the kids would have loved this portion of the hike as it was just rock climbing...no marked pathways, but just finding the best way to keep climbing up to the next level as far as you wanted to go.

I made it all the way to the top of one of the spires.  It was a bit of a challenge of climbing and nerves, but I enjoyed the exhilaration of sitting on top of the spire.

We finished off our first day in Sedona with dinner at Tortas de Fuego.  It was good, but not great.

We started our next day with breakfast at our condo and then we headed out for our hike de jour...Chapel trail to Broken Arrow to High on the Hog to Mystic loop.

We parked near the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which was a beautiful and moving piece of architecture and religion.  The trailhead we were using was right near the chapel.

We really enjoyed this hike.  It was uncrowded, but had some beautiful views, some fun climbing, and some double black diamond pathways.  The distinction intimidated us a bit at first until we realized that the rating system was more aimed at those trying to maneuver the trails on mountain bikes.  Definitely less intimidating when we were just hiking them.

The loop was around 4 miles.  Hiking on the red rocks required following the rock cairns and the trail signs as it was sometimes hard to decipher where the trail actually was.

After our hike, we went back to our condo to relax a bit, read, and then we headed out for dinner at Colt Grill BBQ and Spirits.  It was a good meal of smoked meats, and we timed it just right to order and find a seat as the crowds really picked up soon after we sat down.  We followed dinner with relaxing on the couch and watching 'Fall Guy', which was a winner.

Our last day of Sedona hiking required an early start as there were 2 popular hikes that I really wanted to experience without the crowds.  We got up and out early to hike Cathedral Rock.  We accomplished our mission as we were just the second car in the parking lot.

Although only a 1.2 mile hike, this was basically a fun rock scramble up to the top of Cathedral Rock.  We determined that the kids would have loved it.  And the views from the top with the sun rising and no one else around were incredible.

As one of the most popular hikes in all of Sedona, I had read horror stories about full parking lots, lines of people, and closed roads requiring a shuttle to just get you to the trail head.  I guess when it's November, in the 30's, and early in the morning, you can beat the crowds and enjoy the experience sans people...just the way I like my hikes.

Cathedral Rock was a favorite hike, and I'm so glad we started our day that way.

We followed up Cathedral Rock with another popular hike:  Devil's Bridge.  And although we encountered more people than at Cathedral Rock, we were still able to be there early enough to avoid too many people.

Again, I had read many stories about people having to wait an hour or more for their "turn" to get their picture taken on Devil's Bridge.  Our 5-10 minute wait didn't seem too bad.

The 4-mile round trip hike was pleasant, and we found a fun little off-shoot of the trail where we could hike down under the bridge, which gave a different perspective.  Just glad nobody dropped anything from off the bridge while we were down there.

We finished off our day of hiking with the 6.5 mile Boynton Canyon Trail.  It was an out and back trail that skirted along a luxury resort at the beginning/end, so that was a little unfortunate.  I don't generally like to see buildings while I'm hiking on a trail.  But once we got passed that, it was a pretty hike through a forested canyon surrounded by red rocks.

The end of the trail was a bit of a climb with some really pretty views of the canyon.

We sat down to enjoy a snack and the views before heading back.

After our hike, we drove back through Sedona, grabbed a picture of the famous blue McDonald's sign, and then took a soak in our condo community hot tub before heading out for dinner.

Our dinner on our last night in Sedona was at Butterfly Burger, which was a unique and upscale burger restaurant.  It was fabulous!!  Definitely one of our favorite meals of the trip.

We enjoyed a good night of sleep and a nice run on Friday morning before eating breakfast in our condo, packing up, and heading back to Phoenix.  We decided to do one hike in the Phoenix area to finish off our week.  We headed straight to the Siphon Draw Trail in the Superstition Mountains.

Our initial plan was to hike the Siphon Draw trail up to Flatiron, which requires unmarked trail maneuvering and rock scrambling.  We talked with a park ranger before starting off who didn't think we'd have enough daylight to get all the way to Flatiron and back, so we just hiked to the end of the Siphon Draw trail.  It was still a nice hike and a fun way to end our week of exploring in Arizona.

We headed to our hotel near the airport, ate dinner at the distinctly west coast establishment In-N-Out Burger, and then settled in for our final night of rest in Arizona before heading for home.

We had such a wonderful week away.

We love spending time in beautiful places doing active things.

Arizona delivered in a big way.  We loved the area, the hiking, the weather, the scenery.

But we also enjoyed the relaxation and sleeping in and good meals and quality time together.

Life gets busy, and so we relish these opportunities to enjoy a little time away just for us.  It was a great little get away!
