Dear January

Dear January,

This is not a thank you note as there has not been much to thank you for this year.  True, it hasn't been THAT cold.  But where's the sun?  Can't you at least tease us with a few hours of sun to brighten our spirits?  We had Staley's birthday to give us a jolt of fun in this otherwise mundane month, but there has been little else to motivate me to put on some jeans and get out of the house.  There is something lovely about the occasional pajama day or family movie night or board game marathon, but I really don't need those things for months on end.  If we want fresh air, we have to bundle up and then deal with that deep-down chill that lingers the rest of the day.  The cold and the gray and the short days have me feeling a little tired and unmotivated.  Getting out of bed in the morning is hard.  I push the envelope every day trying to get the girls to school on time.  The kids celebrated the 100th day of school, but it's starting to feel like it's been 100 days of winter.  I'm ready for a little warmth.  A little sun.  A little green.  A little spring.  I know it's not your fault, January.  You've tried. You've kept the completely frigid days to a minimum and provided some good packing snow and tolerable weather for playing in it.  You are definitely not my favorite month, but look on the bright side.  At least you're not February.

Until next year,
Ellen

Pajama days...and days and days...are part of our January survival.

Somedays we don't even bother changing out of our pajamas to play in the snow.

One hundred flowers for the first 100 days of school.

Good-bye, January.
Tell April that we are not so patiently waiting to see her.
