Third Child... First Day

You know it's your third child when...

1. After dropping his sisters off at school, you can only give him 20 minutes to eat breakfast, do a craft, put on his shoes, and grab his backpack for his first day of pre-school...all while you are upstairs getting ready for the day.

2.  The craft that his preschool sent you a month ago is completed in the 5 minutes before you have to rush out the door for his first day.

3.  You haphazardly take a first day of school photo on your phone as he's walking out the door.

4.  You are running so late for his very first day of preschool that you have to drive the 3 blocks to school rather than walk because there is just no time.

5.  You have to cut off the tags and label his backpack as you are heading out the door since you hadn't taken the time to do that before.

6.  You didn't even take him to meet the teacher night because you figure he'll be fine since he's attended so many preschool drop offs and pick ups for his sister.

Briggs was neither overly excited or particularly nervous about his first day of pre-school.  In his easy going way, he was happy to go to pre-school just as he would have been happy to stay home.  He walked into school, hung up his backpack, and wandered into his classroom without a glance back at his mom.

His class only met for an hour today.  He told me that his teacher was nice, they didn't have time to play on the playground, they read a Pete the Cat book about Pete's white shoes changing colors when he stepped in different things, he sat by Grace, and he played with Magna Tiles.  Sounds like a pretty good first day to me.

Briggs and his friend (and neighbor), Grace.

The first day of pre-school is an important step in a child's life.  We may not have been totally prepared.  We may not have spent an hour together decorating the perfect Pete the Cat shoe.  We may not have left 10 minutes early to get cute first day of school pictures.  We may not have been able to stroll leisurely to school, talking about and anticipating all the fun that he would have.  But Briggs didn't care.  Briggs got to go to school with his new Hot Wheels backpack, spend time with friends, build with Magna Tiles, and experience something that he's watched his sisters do over and over again.  As a mother I may have felt that we didn't quite rock this first-day-of-pre-school thing, but then I remembered that pictures and crafts and preparation aren't the things that matter.  Briggs was happy, had a fun first day, and is excited to go back on Thursday.  What more could I possibly want?

My big pre-schooler!
