Good-bye, October!

October came and went in a flash.  We enjoyed some beautiful weather, fall colors, and fun activities to fill in our month.

The kids and I rode in the homecoming parade on the Eureka Library float.  The kids loved throwing candy to all their friends.  We then enjoyed going to watch the homecoming football game with friends.

We celebrated Uma and Papa's 50th anniversary with dinner out and a surprise get-together at our house.  Adelie even sported the flower girl dress from their wedding.

The kids loved spending time with their cousins at the anniversary dinner.

We had a beautiful night for a celebration with family!

We also got together with my side of the family to celebrate Grammie and Uncle Erik's October birthdays as well.  My kids are always excited about time spent with cousins.

We made an afternoon trip to Ackerman Farms to pick out our Halloween pumpkins and see the animals.

The girls and I took Grammie and Miss Vickie to see the play 'Anything Goes' at a local theater.

Some of the girls' friends and teachers from Stage Kids were in the show and they enjoyed getting to see their big kid friends perform.

We took advantage of the nice weather for some outdoor fun.

There was lots of outdoor playtime with neighborhood friends.

Staley enjoyed a fun evening with some friends for dinner and games.

And I even got to catch up with a few friends when I joined Zach to watch Eureka College cross country run at Greenville.

October is one of my favorites.  It's a great time to enjoy beautiful fall weather, colors, and activities before the cold sets in.  It was another fun October!!

Halloween

Halloween is always a favorite for my creative kids who love to dress up.  From classroom parties to school activities to trick-or-treating, we filled our Halloween with fun times...and lots of candy.

Briggs is my most self-conscious child and never wants to go over-the-top with anything he does.  He decided he just wanted to be a pumpkin for Halloween (and wouldn't even wear his hat for his school party).  An orange shirt, some electrical tape, one of Daddy's Bear's stocking caps, and a creative sister was all he needed to make his costume a reality.

Adelie wanted to be Ginny Weasley (from Harry Potter) for Halloween this year.  Luckily we had Staley's Hermione costume from last year, so all we needed were some pins to make the robe a little shorter and a red wig to complete the ensemble.

Staley wasn't sure about dressing up for Halloween, but her enjoyment of all things creative got the best of her.  She decided to be a strawberry.  Although she chose not to wear her green wig for school, she did dress up for school on Halloween and then donned the green wig for trick-or-treating that week-end.

We kicked off the Halloween fun with the Boo Bash at the grade school.  Staley opted to watch a movie with Grandpa while Adelie and Briggs enjoyed hanging out with friends and playing games at the school.

Although it was a little cold and slightly rainy, having it outside was way more tolerable for this Mama.  I'd rather be cold and wet than packed into a hot, crowded, LOUD gym full of chaos.

Although we weren't ahead of the game on pumpkin carving, we did get it done a few days before Halloween.  All 3 kids were able to design and carve their own pumpkins!  Winning!!

Adelie was determined to get a "unique" pumpkin to carve this year and loved her little green one.

And Staley mixed things up with some musical notes on hers instead of a face.

Zach, like usual, went all out with his Ironman carving.

Now that Staley is in middle school, they don't have classroom parties, but I got to enjoy some time with both Briggs and Adelie at their school parties.

Briggs enjoyed playing games, eating snacks, and doing Halloween crafts with his friends at school.

Adelie did too!!

We finished off our Halloween fun with trick-or-treating with friends Stella and Olivia.  They joined us to trick or treat in our neighborhood and then we joined them in theirs.  Twice the fun...and twice the candy!

It was a happy Halloween!!

She Writes Too

Staley wrote the following for a school assignment:

The Best Part of Me

The best parts of me are my feet and my ankles.  My feet are small.  Smaller than my friends' feet.  I like to say that I have pixie feet.  My feet are pale in the winter but in the summer, they tan a little bit.  With my feet I am able to sprint quickly down the street.  I am also able to lightly leap off the diving board and roller blade effortlessly in my driveway.  Without my feet I would not be able to skillfully tap dance or fearlessly climb rocks.  I also wouldn't be able to astound my family by smoothly standing on one foot for well over a minute.
My ankles are not too thin and not too fat.  They are just the right size for my feet.  Sometimes they are bumpy when they are bitten by bugs, but when all the bugs go away, my ankles are smooth.  With my ankles I am able to walk clumsily around on my heels.  I am also able to shakily hold my little brother on my feet.  Without my ankles I would not be able to spin freely across the dance floor, and through my house.  I wouldn't even be able to walk right and I would have to stiffly waddle around like a penguin.  These are the reasons I think my feet and ankles are the best part of me.

I can't pick a best part of her.  I love it all!!

She Writes...

Adelie wrote the following "hymns" during church the other Sunday:

Hope
Be brave be strong have hope move along.
Be brave be strong have hope get along.
Be kind be faithful have hope be strong.
Have hope!  Have hope!
Have bravness, strongness, kindness, faithfullnes and hope!

The loving and the kind
The lord is always loveing and kind
the lord is forgiving and kind
You sacorficed your life for us
your always loveing always kind.

Have faith
Love Jesus love Jesus he dies on the cross.
just be faithful and remember he is your savyor!
Love Jesus love Jesus have faith and love Jesus!

So deep
I'm already deep.
I can't get up.
I lie in the darkness.
Hoping for a ray of light.
You helped me get up
to the sun shine.
You got me to the light.
You forgive my sin.
I still do sin
I'm not perfect.
You are only perfect.
Jesus Jesus Jesus.

The lord does
The lord loves.
The lord is kind.
He does all right.
He washes away are sin.
The lord loves and does all right.
The lord loves and does all right.

I love this girl's heart and her sincere faith.

Things to Remember

I always like to write down random things that I want to remember about specific times in our daily life.  These are phases that I will probably forget if I don't write them down.  But someday I will read back on these and the memories will come back to me as small, yet defining moments in our day to day.

I want to remember:

1.  How Staley snaps her fingers every time she is walking from one place to another.  I never have to wonder where she is in the house or where she is heading, because as she's walking, she is also snapping her fingers...CONSTANTLY.

2.  How the girls now always have to sleep with a sleep mask on.  Yellow Bear (Teddy), Fuzzington, and Bear Bear are all still the constant sleep companions for my kids, but sleep masks have been added to the mix for the girls.

3.  How Briggs still often wakes once in the night to use the restroom, but now he will sometimes (not always) take himself to the bathroom and then put himself back to bed without coming in to wake us up.  If I wake up in the morning and his bedroom door is open instead of closed, I know he chose not to wake us...and I appreciate that!

4.  How Staley LOVES the public library.  She volunteers there once a week after school, but will often ask to walk to the library on other free afternoons, "just to hang out."  If my pre-teen daughter wants to go hang out somewhere after school, I love that it's the library.

5.  How Adelie was SO pleased by her teacher's high praise at her parent teacher conference.  Her teacher went on and on about Adelie's high reading test scores (in the 99th percentile), and Adelie couldn't wait to share that with us.

6.  How Briggs is such a creature of habit that we had to bribe him with jelly bellies, just like potty training, to encourage him to stand for peeing instead of sitting.  Each time he stood up to pee, he'd get a jelly belly and so would his sisters...so he had lots of encouragement.  Habits are hard to break, but jelly bellies definitely help.

7.  How each of the kids has a book series they are reading (or re-reading).  Staley is re-reading the Land of Stories series, Adelie is re-reading the Wide Awake Princess series, and Briggs has started reading the Dinosaur Cove series.  He is very proud of himself for reading these chapter books.

8.  How Staley, and Adelie to a lesser extent, are always reading multiple books at the same time.  Currently Staley is reading Land of Stories, Treasure Island, and the Fellowship of the Ring (along with other random books she picks up around the house or at the library) while Adelie is reading the Wide Awake Princess books and Holes.

9.  How family movie night remains a challenge because Briggs is still pretty averse to any movie that he hasn't seen before or that might have a bad guy or a scary part.  If Briggs had his way, movie night would always just be watching episodes of TV shows like Paw Patrol or Bluey.  Generally Zach and I have to just choose the movie, and typically Briggs will stick it out once it has started.

10.  How Adelie has improved so much with her response to homework.  She has a math worksheet almost every night, and she rarely complains about doing it.  She has also gotten way better about practicing her piano without complaint...and her piano playing skills continue to improve.

11.  How all the kids are getting so much more helpful and independent around the house.  I still need to ask them to help out, but they'll clean the bathrooms, unload the dishwasher, pick up the house, put away their laundry, help out their siblings with things...all with minimal complaints.  It's so nice to move into this next phase of increased helpfulness with decreased complaints.  I'm not complaining about that!

12.  How the girls and I are working through devotional books each night before bed.  After reading to Briggs and putting him to bed, I get 10 minutes of one-on-one time with each girl to do a devotional time together.  I love this special one-on-one time that I get with my kids.

Each moment in time brings a new set of things to remember as my kids continue to grow and change and mature.  Each phase of life brings new challenges, new worries, and new decisions to make, but it also brings about new freedoms, new experiences, and a broader picture of who my kids are growing up to be.  And I, for one, love seeing them grow into this life God has planned for them.

They keep growing and changing...and I love being along for the ride.

Anniversaries

While Zach and I celebrated our 20th anniversary this year, we also had the opportunity to marvel in the 50th wedding anniversaries of our parents.  Finding a person that you want to spend 20 years with or 50 years with or 80 years with can be difficult.  I feel so blessed that our parents are such a good example to us of how to build a successful and sustained marriage.  And I am so grateful that God took two sets of high school sweethearts and led them down a lasting road of love and marriage that, 50 years later, produced a beautiful life and a beautiful family together.

We Are...

We often refer to the quote from Zach's grandmother when talking about our family.  We have a beautiful family...kinda loud, but a beautiful family.  We were having a conversation with the kids the other day, asking them what kind of family they think we are.  I loved what they came up with.  According to our kids, we are...

A reading family
A train riding family (I bet you can guess who said that one)
A road trip family
A pool family
A hiking family
A running family
A movie night family
An Uncle Bob's family
A climbing family
An outdoorsy family
A Bears family
A giving family

And I sure do love our reading, train riding, road tripping, pool swimming, hiking, running, movie watching, ice cream eating, climbing, outdoorsy, Bears, giving, beautiful family!!
