Off and Running

Like her parents, Staley is a runner now.  Okay, let's be honest.  Like her father.  Her mother claiming to be a runner by the one run she musters every month or so probably doesn't count.  But I digress...  Staley was a walker.  Then a stable walker.  Then a fast walker.  And now, she runs.  Honest to goodness, lift your feet and swing your arms running.  And although not super-fast, keeping up with her these days requires some energy.  Staley now loves to race and chase.  Our nightly family walk around the block involves a lot of 'ready, set, go' and chasing...along with frequent stops to visit with neighbors, pet dogs, smell flowers, pick up rocks/sticks/acorns, and play in puddles.

Since Staley has entered the world of running and seems to enjoy it, we let her experience the comraderie of her first 'race.'  Last Friday, we went to Illinois Wesleyan University for the 'Kids Run for Fun' night with her cousins.  Staley and Liam ran with the 1-2 year olds for 200 meters while Elliott used his boundless energy to propel himself 400 meters around the track.  Liam and Elliott completed their race distances running, while Staley ran about 20 meters and then decided she'd rather be carried while watching the rest of the kids run.  I guess the competetive streak isn't quite there yet.
